Understanding Palliative and Hospice Care

What is Palliative Care?

Palliative care is a specialized approach to medical care that focuses on providing relief from the symptoms, pain, and stress of serious illness, including life-limiting conditions such as cancer, heart disease, and chronic respiratory diseases. The goal of our palliative care at home services is to improve the quality of life for both the client and their loved ones. Unlike other forms of care that focus solely on curing the disease, palliative care is holistic, addressing the physical, emotional, social, and spiritual aspects of the client’s experience. This form of care can be provided alongside curative treatments or as the primary approach when it becomes clear that a cure is not possible.

Who Needs Palliative Care?

Palliative care is suitable for individuals of any age who have been diagnosed with serious illnesses, whether the condition is curable, chronic, or life-threatening. It is particularly beneficial for individuals who are experiencing symptoms that significantly impact their quality of life, such as pain, shortness of breath, fatigue, constipation, nausea, loss of appetite, or difficulty sleeping. Additionally, palliative care is essential for helping clients and families navigate complex medical decisions, providing guidance that aligns with their values and goals.

Benefits of Palliative Care

The benefits of palliative care are profound and multifaceted. Clients receive tailored symptom management that alleviates physical discomfort, while also gaining access to emotional and psychological support to address feelings of anxiety, depression, or fear. The care team works closely with clients and their families to ensure that everyone’s needs are met, offering guidance on making informed decisions about treatment options and care goals. Importantly, palliative care provides continuity of care, ensuring that the client’s needs are consistently addressed as their condition evolves.

Distinctions Between Hospice and Palliative Care

Palliative Care

Palliative care can be introduced at any stage of a serious illness, from the initial diagnosis through to the end stages. It can be provided in various settings, including the client’s home, hospitals, and specialized palliative care facilities. The primary focus of palliative care is on relieving symptoms, managing pain, and providing support that enhances the client’s quality of life. Palliative care teams are interdisciplinary, often comprising doctors, nurses, social workers, and spiritual care providers who work together to address the comprehensive needs of the client and their family.

Hospice Care

Hospice care is a specific type of palliative care that is provided to client who are in the final stages of a terminal illness, typically with a prognosis of six months or less to live. The emphasis in hospice care shifts from curative treatments to comfort care, ensuring that individuals can spend their remaining time in peace and dignity, surrounded by their loved ones. Hospice care is centered on the belief that every individual deserves to live their final days with as much comfort and quality of life as possible. The goal of hospice care is to provide emotional, psychological, and spiritual support to both the client and their family.

Does hospice cover 24-hour care at home?

Yes, our hospice care can ensure 24-hour coverage at home, either offering around-the-clock care or filling in the gaps when family members need a break. This ensures that our clients and their families receive continuous support.

What Our Clients Say

Leanne Y

I can not say enough positive things about this company and the people that work here! I had 48 1/2 hours to set up a lot of things to bring my mother home, for palliative care. I had next to no idea what to do or where to turn for homecare. I came across Remember When Homecare, I called and explained what was needed. Jen and Steph were amazing! I had a meeting the next day, for paper work related things, and I am so thankful for Steph coming on short notice! She was great! Steph put me at ease, and pointed out things that I had not thought about asking, when it came to discharge from the hospital. The homecare workers that have been at my parents house, have been amazing with both of my parents! Although they are there to care for my mother, they have been absolutely amazing with my father as well! I want to thank everyone for taking 50% of the stress off of my dad and giving him a break! Anna, Samson and Manpreet I will never be able to say thank you enough for all of the care, compassion and friendship that you all have shown my parents!
